shady people who turned out to be really nice people

5-22-09 ~ Today was without a doubt our toughest yet. With two major climbs over a 10 hour, 60 mile ride, in addition to 90 degree heat and a 10 mile stretch in a valley pass where 30 mph winds hit us directly on our left side, we were completely exhausted when we finally arrived in Morengo Valley. We became very apprehensive about a 15 mile switchback descent when a local trucker told us of the eminent dangers and the many body bags that he had seen down the windy stretch. With caution, we slowly meandered our way down the mountain, seeing many beautiful overlooks into scenic Palm Springs. Immediately upon entering the small town of Morongo Valley, a local named Nathan approached us in a friendly curiosity. He directed us to the a local park to sleep for the night and a restaurant called the Happy Cooker, where we feasted on double cheeseburgers, fries, and iced tea; this was our third night in a row eating burgers fries (for the sodium and protein). Our waitress took interest in our quest and donated 4 milkshakes to our cause; much needed calories for our cheap wallets. We then trekked over to the local park, where to our surprise Nathan was waiting for us, and eventually connected us with his biker friend Mike in Yucca Valley.
