Almost Home

7/2/09 ~ Since we only had a 50 mile ride to Gettysburg, we spent the morning sleeping. It was great. We got on the rode around 9 after a great breakfast of Captain Crunch. We fought and tooth and nail with Cooper but he insisted on pulling the BOB today, so we gave him the extra BOB axle and hooked him up.
Out of McConnellsburg was a big climb up to the top of Tuscarora pass. It was a brutal climb. At the top it felt like we were in a dream because we were completely surrounded by fog. The most surreal experience was when we started to descend, we came down out of this cloud and got to overlook the whole valley. It was one of the most incredible experiences on our trip. We descended down into the farm country of Pennsylvania that reminded us so much of home.
We took lunch in Chambersburg and than continued the ride towards Gettysburg. We just gotta stay on the bike. Out of Chambersburg, there was one last climb through Caledonia State Park but it wasn't to bad. Than before we knew it, we were descending into Gettysburg.
In Gettysburg we made a quick loop around the battlefield and than rode through town and grabbed subs at Sheetz. We also grabbed a nice nap outside the gas station. I found particular entertainment on watching the expressions on people's faces of seeing four guys all sacked out on the cement with four bikes parked in various places. After the nap, Seth contacted his Uncle Frank who lived pretty close to Gettysburg. The plan was to park our stuff at his cousin's house and he would come and pick us up and take us to his house.
Things worked out smoothly and we got to Frank's farm. There we got a drink of cold iced tea and than drove over to Dora Kawate's house to swim. Dora is Frank's sister and we got to clean off in their pool. It was a great afternoon and we're thankful for all the hospitality we were shown. Seth also got to talk with Masako Kawate who attends Wheaton College with him and Isaac Kawate a friend who often went camping with him.
That evening, Mrs. Myers provided a delicious meal of ham, green beans, and potatoes. We ate til we were stuffed and than relaxed outside enjoying the nice summer evening. Later on, Seth's grandparents, Uncle Duane, Aunt Joan, and Uncle Darren stopped in for dessert and to here about the trip. The apple pie and ice cream was great and it was refreshing to spend the evening with relatives. We shared stories and than crashed into bed excited for the next day and the promise of returning home.
