Pennsylvania

6/29/09 ~ This morning, we woke up and Russ the youth pastor of the methodist church we slept in was there making us wonderful oatmeal pancakes. We ate till we were full and thanked him so much for all the help he was. We threw everything in the BOBs and headed out for the most beautiful state of all - Pennsylvania!
We rode that morning through Ohio and it was beautiful. There was green rolling hills and forest all around us. Some of the ride went along a beautiful lake placed in the hills of Ohio. It was a great ride. Before long we were in Cadiz and we took a quick break there to refuel.
From Cadiz we rode on a divided highway the whole way to Steubenville which is right on the Ohio river. As we rode into Steubenville, the ride became complete madness. We were flying down a hill towards the river and cars are flying past us and we're trying to make lane changes on a four lane highway. We were nailing all these huge potholes and one time Bobby's BOB hit a hole and jackknifed sideways. It looked for sure like he was going down but he kept moving.
We survived the highway riding and got into Steubenville. After some time spent asking where stuff was, we found a McDonalds and had lunch. We could look across the Ohio River to the panhandle of West Virginia and we knew that right beyond that was Pennsylvania.
Moving on we crossed the Ohio river and rode south for awhile along the river. In Wellsburg, we turned east and hit some of the steepest hills we ever saw the entire trip. It was absolutely the hardest riding of the trip in western Pennsylvania. We would ride straight down a hill pedaling as hard as we could so that we could keep our momentum to shoot straight up the next one. It was madness.
In Buffalo Pennsylvania, we stopped at a guys house to ask for something to drink. We met Bob Lievengood and his two friends who were sitting in the garage at 2:00 on a monday drinking Beer. He gave us soda and ice cream and tried really hard to get us to stay at his house. We were hoping to get to Washington so we turned him down and kept moving despite his constant comments that us three skinny white boys would for sure be shot in Washington.
We rolled into town and got chinese for supper. Dietrich was great and managed to find us a place to stay with a local pastor, John, and his wife, Pam. Pam took us back to her house and we relaxed and spent the night talking with her and telling her about our trip. They were very hospitable and we are so thankful for their help.
