Work Before Play

6-3-09 ~ After a good night sleep in beds courtesy of Josh and Jill, we woke up at 6:00 A.M. and made ourselves egg sandwiches. The night before, Josh had properly forewarned us of the challenge of the ride we would have today as we had to climb Boulder Mountain, a 3,100 foot climb from 6,500 ft to 9,600 ft in a 17 mile climb. We said our goodbyes to Josh and Jill and slowly trekked up the mountain. After 3 hours we summited the mountain, rode down the valley into Torrey. We stopped at a local gas station, made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and relaxed before the rest of the ride. We then dropped out of Torrey, to the supposedly "all down hill" rode to Hanksville. That statement was for the most part true as we dropped into Capitol Reef National Park and followed the Fremont River for 47 miles to Hanksville. Utah has not failed to provide us with many different landscapes, and during this 47 mile stretch we saw beautiful red rock canyons, green fields, a flowing river, and weird grey mounds. About ten miles outside of Hanksville, moped after moped began to pass us. We eventually caught up to them at a turnoff and a group of fathers and sons told us they were touring the southeastern desert on Mopeds. We then trekked on and arrived in Hanksville. We went to the local grocery store, got a two liter, and crashed on the sidewalk. We searched the town for a house to stay in, but failed. We ended up setting up camp on the porch of the local community center and went to bed early prepping for our next two days through the desert.
photos are taking a while to upload due to a slow internet connection; they will be posted later
